REEF lands the hit.

Every word is a move.

Word Biome is a spelling game crossed with a roguelite. Each stop is a short puzzle: find good words on your board, fill in the creature's field card before your stamina runs out, and work your way along the biome's trail.

  1. Spell

Build a word from the tiles on your board. Every real word fills in the field card of the creature in front of you.

  2. Read the creature

Each creature shows its next move before it makes it, like snatching a vowel or poisoning a tile. Plan around it.

  3. Reroll freely

Stuck with a tough board? Reroll it whenever you like. It costs you a turn, so the creature gets to act.

  4. Meet the legend

Follow ten stops along each biome's trail. Halfway, the biome throws a party (Lantern Night, the Midsummer Fair, the Crystal Gala, the Firefly Ball) and everyone turns up in costume. At the end waits a legend, and legends change tactics halfway.

Know your kit.

Each biome has its own names for these. The ones below are for the Ocean.

Air

Air is your health. You start each level with 70. Every creature shows its next move, including how much air it will cost you.

Finish with more left for more stars: three at 70% or better, two at 40%. Run out and you can revive once per level with 35 air. The Daily Run gives you 40 for all five creatures, and one revive of 20 (none in Hard mode).

Longer words score more

Every letter has a value, and rare letters like Q, X and Z are worth the most. Length multiplies it: 5 letters ×1.5, 6 letters ×2, 7 or more ×3.

Themed words like REEF and CORAL add another ×1.5.

Special tiles

Long words leave a special tile where they end. Five letters forge a Pearl, which doubles a word's score. Six forge an Anemone, which keeps scoring for the next few turns. Seven or more forge a Wave, which sweeps its whole row into your word.

Use two special tiles in one word for a combo.

Tidal Wave

Every letter you spell fills your Tidal Wave. When it's full, your next word scores double and sweeps the whole board into it.

Creature hits drain it, so don't sit on it too long. The best time is a boss's second half, when it changes tactics.

Hazards

Creatures push back. Spiked tiles cost 3 air each time you spell with them, but a Wave sweeps them away safely. Crusted tiles are locked until you spell a word next to them.

Some creatures snatch your vowels, raise a shield or shuffle your tiles.

Wild finds

The first time you clear Dives 3, 6 and 9 in a world, you find a cache: take one of two wild finds. Each biome has its own, and you keep yours for every level in that world.

See all the wild finds

All the wild finds

  • Lucky Sand Dollar Your first word for each creature counts as 2 letters longer.
  • Sea Grapes Every E you spell restores 1 air.
  • Spiral Whelk Words of 4+ letters ending in S count double.
  • Pearl Words with J, Q, X or Z count double.
  • Sea Sponge Creature moves cost you 2 less.
  • Conch Shell Your Tidal Wave fills at 18 instead of 24.
  • Sea Glass Special tiles form from words one letter shorter.
  • Scallop Shell Each creature's first move costs you nothing.
  • Fire Coral Anemone tiles leave creatures stung for 4 a turn instead of 2.
  • Gull Feather Swept tiles count double their letter value.
  • Kelp Ribbon Words of 6+ letters restore 3 air.
  • Coconut Gain 10 max air and restore 10 right away.
  • Sea Lettuce Spiked tiles restore 2 air instead of costing you.

A new biome

New creatures and a new boss every month. Everyone gets the first 3 levels; members get all of it the day it lands.

Every creature is a real animal.

No goblins, no trolls. Every creature is a real species, and halfway along each trail they turn up in costume for the biome's party. Tap any creature in the game to open its field card, and everyone you meet goes into your journal. Or read them all here.

Field card Cave Olm Lives Underground waters of caves in southeastern Europe Status Vulnerable (IUCN) It is blind; its tiny eyes are hidden under its skin. It can live for over 100 years. It can go years without eating. Read the full field card

The Daily Run

A new run every day, free for everyone: five creatures ending with a legend, and one attempt with one revive. Play it, climb the Daily leaderboard, then send your share card to the group chat. Members can also take on Hard mode and replay past days.

And one hidden achievement: you'll know it when you find it.

Kids Mode, for young explorers.

Playing with a younger speller, about 5 to 8? Turn on Kids Mode in the game's Settings for an easier, gentler expedition through the same biomes and real animals.

Easy words to find

Friendly letters: never a Q, and a J, X or Z only inside an easy word like JAM, FOX or ZOO. Easy words are hidden on every board too: words young readers know, like CAT, FISH, CRAB and MOSS.

Help when stuck

Tap Hint to see where a word starts, and again to see the whole word. Letters glow green on the way to a word and gold once it's spelled, and every word is read aloud.

Gentle creatures, no losing

Smaller creatures with gentler moves, more stamina, and no game over: run out, take a big breath, and keep going.

Grown-ups stay in charge

Kids Mode keeps its own stars and stays off the leaderboards, and the family-friendly word filter is always on. Settings and the membership ask a grown-up a quick sum first.

Good questions.

What is Word Biome?

Word Biome is a word roguelite game for iPhone and iPad made by Marbir Digital, LLC. You spell words from a tile board to meet real animals across themed biomes such as the ocean, forest, cave and swamp, following a trail of ten stops in each to a legendary animal at the end.

Is Word Biome free?

Yes, to start. The free version includes the first 3 levels of every biome, and today's Daily Run, boss included. A membership at $2.99 a month (US) unlocks every world, all levels and bosses, Ascension, the Daily Run's Hard mode and archive, plus a new world every month. New members can try it free for 7 days.

What can I play it on?

iPhone and iPad, with iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later.

Do I need to make an account?

No. Leaderboards and achievements run through Game Center, so there is nothing new to sign up for.

Is it family friendly?

Yes. A family-friendly word filter is on by default and can be changed in Settings, and slurs are always blocked. For younger players there's also Kids Mode.

Can young children play?

Yes, with Kids Mode, made for players about 5 to 8: turn it on in the game's Settings. Easy words are hidden on every board, a Hint button shows the way, words are read aloud, creatures are gentle, and there's no losing. It keeps its own stars and stays off the leaderboards, and Settings and the membership ask a grown-up a quick sum first.

Are the creatures really real animals?

Every one of them. Tap a creature in the game to open its field card.

What's the journal?

Your expedition's field journal, one per biome, opened from the home screen. It tells you about the biome and lists every creature on its trail, with the ones you haven't met yet as silhouettes, your notes from each stop, and how far you've climbed in Ascension.

Is there a limit on rerolls?

No. Reroll your board as often as you like, but each reroll gives the creature a turn.

What is Ascension?

Meet a biome's legend to unlock Ascension, four harder tiers for members. Each adds a rule: tougher creatures, fewer vowels and more rare letters, a locked tile with every new creature, and finally a slower bonus meter with no revive.

How often do new biomes arrive?

We plan to release a new biome every month. Everyone can play its first 3 levels, and members get all of it, boss included, the day it lands.
